Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)

Have you heard of the world-famous tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons? If you haven’t, I’m here to tell you that this movie adaptation is fantastic and underrated- and you don’t need to be a D&D expert to enjoy it! If you aren’t aware, this movie has had a second wind on Netflix (it was on Netflix’s global top 10 streaming for the week of September 30, 2024 to October 6, 2024), and after watching it, I totally understand why! This movie is finally getting the attention it deserves – read on to find out my thoughts and why you need to watch this movie ASAP!

Spoiler Warning: The following review contains light spoilers about the movie’s plot and characters. If you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend checking it out first and then coming back to read my thoughts!

Quick Overview:

  • A ragtag group comes together to defeat a great evil and discovers how important family is – and learn a lot about each other along the way. I mean, this sounds like a typical fantasy movie, but there’s a lot more to this film!
  • This is a heist film with a fantasy twist!
  • Honestly, this movie came across my recommended while scrolling on Amazon Prime. I gave it a chance because I love fantasy and action/adventure – and I’m so glad I did! I can’t believe I didn’t watch this movie sooner!

2. The Good:

  • Okay – this movie was an unexpected hit with me!
  • The acting was excellent and the actors really had great chemistry. I especially loved the interaction and banter between Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez as Edgin and Holga. Justice Smith as Simon the sorcerer and Sophia Lillis as Doric the druid are also fantastic and add some humor and action into the movie, along with heartfelt moments. Simon has some hilarious scenes and Doric is a cool and independent shapeshifter with a compelling past.
  • There was a lot of humor throughout the movie that was just right! Even during tense moments, the humor is well-placed and doesn’t take away from any important scenes.
  • The story was very compelling and exciting, and from the first 5 minutes I was hooked. This movie will also introduce you to characters you love and feel invested in!
  • There were a lot of great moments in this movie! One that comes to mind is when Simon finally gains enough confidence to take control of his powers – this is a moment that I’m sure many people can relate to. His journey from an insecure, bumbling sorcerer to a confident, powerful spellcaster is super satisfying.
  • If you love action, there’s no lack of it in this movie! There are several action-packed moments, like when the crew has to navigate a treacherous maze or have to face down deadly monsters.
  • I also really enjoyed Edgin’s journey and touching story! I’m glad he learned the importance of family and how to let go – and cherish those in front of him.
  • I find it really cool that I could easily watch this movie without knowing anything about Dungeons and Dragons! Like, seriously, I know nothing about it. So, if I could enjoy it, I’m sure those who know about or play Dungeons and Dragons would like this movie!

3. The Bad:

  • The cast and crew did a fantastic job of keeping me entertained from start to finish. I don’t really think there were any bad parts. Some people might find the movie a bit long, but I didn’t even notice because there was always something happening!

4. The Verdict:

  • It’s not in theaters anymore, so definitely grab some popcorn and check it out on streaming! I saw it on Amazon Prime. It’s also available on Netflix now! I think anyone that likes action/adventure, fantasy, or heist films (or a combination!) would really find this movie funny, exciting, and enjoyable. Give it a watch and find out what you’ve been missing!
